What is Meditation?

Meditation isn’t about becoming a new person, a different person, or even a better person. It’s about training in consciousness and getting a healthy sense of perception. You’re not trying to off-ramp your beliefs or stances. You’re learning to observe them without a verdict. And ultimately, you may begin to better understand them as well.

In simple terms, meditation is an activity that helps you to connect with your inner soul. It helps in achieving a state of contentment and peace of mind. When you meditate in a serene environment, you actually feel calmer and refreshed. Meditation takes you on a voyage of self-discovery.

Meditation is a skill

Learning meditation is much like learning any other skill. Consider exercising a muscle that you have never worked out before. To get it comfortable, you need to practice it consistently. It becomes much easier if you have a teacher.

It’s meditation practice, not meditation perfect

There is nothing like ‘perfect meditation’. It might be possible that your focus will wander but that’s perfectly alright! It’s common and happens to almost everyone. Moreover, it’s a part of the experience. Here, the most important thing is to meditate regularly. Meditation should get dissolved in your habits. It is among those things where the journey is more important than the destination.

Meditation – A part of Ashtanga Yoga

The seventh branch in Ashtanga Yoga is Meditation. When a person starts studying and practicing meditation, he/she begins to develop a steady witnessing awareness of all that enters the field of consciousness. This awareness leads to Samadhi (a state of intense concentration), the eventual goal of a Yogi.
